Traveling with young kids

Helpful apps and headphones come to the rescue!

Do you find yourself searching for activities to keep kids entertained while waiting at the airport, going for a long car drive, staying quiet while others are sleeping in a hotel room or dealing with unanticipated delays? I am all for playing traditional games, looking out the window and reading a book, but there are times when an iPad or other device can come to the rescue.

Here are a few of my top picks for amazing award winning apps for both iOS and Android mobile devices that you might want to check out when you’re traveling with young kids. They foster early learning and spark imagination while providing engaging fun content.

Best Apps to Use When Traveling with Young Kids

  • Khan Academy Kids– This app is amazing. It is totally free and offers a leveled reading library, logic games, videos and more.
  • The Toca Boca series of apps– This is a wonderful series of apps that fosters creativity, exploration and adventure. What would your kids enjoy? A world of horses, cars, trains, pets hairstyles, cooking, building, make believe or school? Toca Life: Stable,  Toca Cars, Toca Hair Salon, Toca Kitchen, Toca Builders, Toca Fairy Tales, and Toca School are a few favorites of kids I know.
  • Duck Duck Moose– This series offers over 20 apps that foster creativity, imagination and early learning concepts. A few favorites of kids I know include: Word Wagon, Draw and Tell, Princess Fairy Tale Maker, Trucks, and Superhero ComicBook Maker.

Do you have one device and two kids that can use it at the same time? Check out headphones that  limit the volume for hearing protection and offer a sharing function.
