What is the course format and schedule?
  • After registration, you will be invited to complete a form to help me learn a bit more about you and your situation. We will begin to create your 30-day individualized Action Plan with attainable goals. 
  • Throughout the 30-days, you will receive emails with additional resources and laser-focused videos using the Teachable interactive learning platform as well as additional  content to promote learning.
  • Video-content will be rolled out during the course. If you fall behind, no worries. Once the videos are available to view, they will remain available during the remainder of the Challenge and for up to 2 weeks after the Challenge ends. 
  • 8- one hour long online office hours using Zoom Video Conferencing will be provided during the 30 days. It will be our time to talk as a group about successes as well as frustrations and to provide additional support of the information shared in the weekly video.  I will do my best to ensure that all participants are available for at least 4 of the sessions, realizing that we may be living in different time zones.
What will I learn?
By the end of this course, you will be on your way to using your computer and/or mobile devices (tablet and phone) to help with reading, writing, managing time, and staying organized. You will be much more aware of all that is available and will have taken a deep dive into a few of the features that are potentially appropriate solutions for your situation. At the end of the 30 days, you will have a framework and knowledge of features, strategies and specific technologies for moving forward.
What resources will I need?
You need a fast reliable internet connection to access this course on a computer or mobile device and an average of 30 minutes a day or a few hours a week. No new content will be provided over the weekend so you can use that time to catch up and practice using new tech tools and strategies you learned during the week.  This mini-course is designed for individuals who have a basic knowledge of using a computer, downloading content from the internet, creating online accounts and reading content as well as posting comments on social media.  You certainly don’t have to be a computer expert. It is also fine if you are not a Facebook user. The interactive chats will take place within the Teachable course or live during the Zoom screen sharing sessions. Participants will be asked to create a Google account, download the Chrome browser and configure settings of devices and apps in order to explore new resources using visual supports that are provided in the course. The most important requirement for this course is that you have the desire to learn new skills and time to explore.
Why should I take this course when the media is filled with stories on how technology can be harmful?
I agree that much harm can come from unrestricted access to online sites, social media and technology. I share the concern of many that when we use some technologies, we trade privacy for convenience. However, individuals with learning, language and cognitive challenges deserve to be exposed in a thoughtful manner to everyday assistive technologies and strategies that have the potential to benefit them in life-changing ways. Although it is not the focus of this course, I will provide some suggestions for promoting safe practices as well as resources for learning more on this topic.
How do I know if this is the right course for me?
I developed this course with parents, tutors, therapists and educators in mind, but it can be taken by all who want to learn more about using the features of their technologies to help with literacy, learning and executive functioning. Many of you who take the course will have children who have been diagnosed with ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia and specific learning challenges. However, there are also many parents who want to help their children who may not have a particular diagnosis but he or she is underperforming in school, isn’t sufficiently motivated or seems scattered and disorganized. As I create this course, I have in mind the strategies and tools that would be appropriate for parents to use with kids who are in 5th grade and older as well as adults who have ADHD as well as language and learning related challenges.
Will I be able to view all of the course at once to just find the resources I want to explore now?
No. This course is not meant to be used as a reference tool or online library of training tutorials. If you are clear about what you want to learn how to use now, it may be a better fit for you to search for an online video tutorial of that product or feature. This course was designed for parents and educators who want to be shown resources that they may not realize exist as well as strategies for implementation with support along the way. The online office hours  are live and additional content will be added as we further develop the scope of this course together. I will be producing the videos shorly before I distribute them so they are up to date and reflect appropriate content for the week. The benefit of the pre-recorded videos is that you can then view them and pause as needed. We all learn differently and I am trying my best to set you all up for success. 
Aren't schools and therapy clinics as well as vocational and rehabilitation centers already doing what is best?
Unfortunately, most individuals who have the potential to benefit the most from assistive technologies are never exposed to the tools that can help maximize independence and success. Funding and training in this area are scarce. This interactive online course is appropriate for family members as well as speech-language pathologists, special educators and other professionals who want help zeroing in quickly on strategies and products that may be used to help accelerate progress toward goals.

Do you offer CEUs or Certificates of Completion?
A Certificate of Completion will be provided at the end of the course, if all of the videos have been viewed, upon request. Professional CEUs are not available at this time.
